The UNA of Greater Milwaukee invites you to become informed on the “Crisis within the Climate Crisis” as we celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd . The federal government under the Trump Administration is severely cutting and eliminating funding for programs that address environmental problems.

Environmental advocates Julie Byrnes Enslow and Dean Muller will address the challenges they face in advocating for the safety of the planet and the lives of people affected by climate change.

Julie Byrnes Enslow is a leader in the Milwaukee chapter of 350.org, the international climate action group that has organized many demonstrations addressing climate change.  She developed presentations on Militarism and Climate Change that were

given nationally and at World Social Forums. Julie was a key organizer of the 20th anniversary of Earth Day, which attracted 16,000 people to downtown Milwaukee.  As a leader of Wisconsin Peace Action, she focused on many issues including moving money from militarism to human needs.

Dean Muller is the president of Wisconsin for Environmental Justice (WEJ), working to get the state, cities, and counties to pursue litigation against the fossil fuel industry for climate damages.  WEJ seeks to increase the public's awareness of the connection between fossil fuels and climate change and how it affects our daily lives.

Dean will update us on national litigation and his efforts here in Wisconsin.  It’s about fairness for Wisconsin’s taxpayers.  WEJ’s goal is to build a statewide community of organizations and individuals that will effectively bring about the change we need to meet the challenges of climate change

This year’s theme calls for action that can unlock equal rights, power and opportunities for all and a feminist future where no one is left behind. Central to this vision is empowering the next generation—youth, particularly young women and adolescent girls—as catalysts for lasting change.

The year  2025 is a pivotal moment as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This document has transformed the women’s rights agenda in terms of legal protection, access to services, youth engagement, and change in social norms, stereotypes and ideas stuck in the past.

G’Toya Blackmon is a Healing Justice Organizer, Political Healer, and Workshop Facilitator dedicated to decolonized wellness advocacy, community justice, and mental health equity.

With a background in psychology, legal studies, abolition, and grassroots organizing, she creates accessible spaces for communities deeply impacted by racialized violence to heal and reclaim power through multidisciplinary efforts.

G’Toya’s work bridges traditional philosophies with contemporary healing, centering Black feminist thought, trauma responsiveness, and transformative justice to reimagine collective liberation, sovereignty and energetic revolution.

Monique “MoeSghetti” Portwood is a mental health counselor, podcaster, and performance artist from Milwaukee, WI. MoeSghetti’s love for performance began in her local church’s children’s choir. Through her adulthood, MoeSghetti has remained engaged in music ministry and expanded her artistry into poetry and theatre. As the host or the “Moe-ment with MoeSghetti” podcast, she uses her mental health and spiritual background to chronicle her wellness journey, share stories from members of the community, and teach practical ways to maintain wholistic health. “My imagination is my favorite playground. I use the stage to bring those thoughts to life, spread joy, and promote healing. I hope to inspire others to do the same.”

Nateya Taylor is a multimedia storyteller based in Milwaukee, WI. As a strong advocate for racial equity, health equity, and Black liberation, she intersects written and visual storytelling to interrogate the anti-blackness that is endemic in our social structures and the internalized anti-blackness that accompanies it. Instead, she reveals the multifacetedness of Blackness through her work.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science degree in Urban Studies with a certificate in Digital Cultures. Her research focuses on residential segregation, Black geographies, and Black resistance. She incorporates her academic expertise into her storytelling practice to tell informative and educational stories.

Nateya is also the founder of Naesthetycs, an emerging multimedia production company that aims to use authentic storytelling and aesthetics as a catalyst that inspires empathy, ignites activism, and leads to more equitable futures for Black folks and other historically marginalized groups.

Dr. Andrea Stapleton, Grace Avila, and Theresa Lindberg, members of the Board of Directors of Global Partners: Running Waters will describe the mission and the work of the organization.  They will describe how Global Partners: Running Waters has impacted lives in Central America by the implementation of water systems while building relationships across nations to collaborate on easing the burdens on human lives resulting from complex systemic inequities.

They will discuss the consequences for people who must live without clean and accessible water, the nature of the work of Global Partners: Running Waters, and the impact on the communities that implement water systems. They will describe how the mission extends beyond the implementation of water systems, but also the creation of cultural exchanges, and the human impact that results from awareness, education, and solidarity.

Dr. Andrea J. Stapleton serves as the President of the Board of Directors of Global Partners: Running Waters. She joined the Board in May 2024. She also serves at Mount Mary University as the Vice President for Mission and Justice.  As part of Mount Mary's leadership team, she leads the University in better understanding and applying the Mission in operations, culture, and strategic direction, particularly in areas of spirituality, diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and social and environmental justice.

Dr. Stapleton has served in higher education for sixteen years as an instructor and administrator in universities and seminaries in Illinois, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.  Her role involves collaborating with other agencies and services to bring forth transformative change in the world, to educate the university community to better understand itself as change agents, and to empower students to lead with competence, not only in their professions but in their communities.

She has been in nonprofit administration and founded a nonprofit service organization. Her research has included several theological topics, including contextual theologies, social justice, and religious pluralism. Her most recent work explores Catholic Higher Education as it engages and responds to the needs of the time, the changing cultural and political landscape, and the changing diversity in students. She is passionate about bringing social justice and environmental justice awareness and action through the mission and ethos of higher education culture, pedagogy, and systems.
_________________________________________

Grace Avila joined the Board of Directors of Global Partners: Running Waters (GPRW) in 2022 and immediately took on the role as Chair of the GPRW Development Committee. In this role, she has demonstrated her versatility and expertise by writing and submitting a diverse range of grants. She has also drafted letters from the office of the GPRW president and played a key role in starting a program in Milwaukee schools that uses a bilingual book about a Honduran water activist to educate students about human rights and environmental activism. Grace was introduced to GPRW through the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND), who hired her in 2019 as the Archives Assistant to work in the School Sisters of Notre Dame North American Archives, located at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee.

Grace’s influence extends beyond the board of GPRW. She is an active member of the SSND Shalom Peace and Nonviolence Committee and the SSND Milwaukee Women's Leadership Luncheon Committee. Her involvement in these committees reflects her commitment to the causes she believes in.

Grace’s academic journey is a testament to her dedication and passion. She graduated from Wisconsin Lutheran College in 2020 with a Bachelor's in History and Theology, a solid foundation that she brings to her roles.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the International Day of Peace as a period of non-violence and cease-fire.

In that declaration, the United Nations’ most inclusive body recognized that peace “not only is the absence of conflict, but also requires a positive, dynamic participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation.”

Milwaukee's schedule for the 2024 United Nations International Day of Peace

This forum is planned as a thoughtful discussion about the current conflict, politics, culture, and diplomacy surrounding the war in Ukraine.  Vladimir Putin launched the Russian invasion of the Republic of Ukraine in February 2022.  If a peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine is to be achieved, it will not result from “victory” on either side.  It has evolved into a “war of attrition.”  Only a stalemate on the fighting fronts, caused by combat deadlock, exhaustion of resources, and war weariness would bring the competing forces to the peace table.

If a cease-fire can be achieved, the best course for lasting peace is through international arbitration and the willingness of Russia and Ukraine to resolve issues that led Putin to launch the Russian invasion and the Ukrainian defense of its national sovereignty.

The United Nations is not officially supporting actual combat, but member states of the European Union and NATO are contributing to the defense of Ukraine in the spirit of Articles 40-51 of the UN Charter, its founding document, without resolution from its Security Council.

International diplomacy is the only process a lasting peace treaty could be negotiated to end the current warfare.  All nations involved in the destructive war in Ukraine are UN members, but Russia is one of five permanent members of the Security Council and is responsible for the February 2022 invasion.  The UNA of Greater Milwaukee presents this forum to provide our community with a rational discourse about the chances for peace between Ukraine and Russia.

Guest Speaker

John Katzka

US Senior Foreign Service Officer – Retired

Interact and learn with MPS 4th – 8th-grade students as they present on nearly 1,500 research projects about the member countries, organs, cultures, and goals of the United Nations.  Our young people are excited to share their work with you!

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE UNSIL WORLD FAIR
UNSIL helps Milwaukee’s young people learn about the world and all it has to offer, starting with the shared responsibilities, opportunities, and leadership that the United Nations offers.  The United Nations Schools of International Learning (UNSIL) program has been implemented in grades 4 through 8 at MPS’ most diverse schools since 2016.

In the program, students learn about the United Nations and its member countries throughout the world.  They think critically about real-world problems, and research solutions, and work together to develop a global perspective.

Each year culminates in a World Fair where students present their work to each other and the community and enjoy cultural performances from fellow MPS students.

Through this experience, students master critical academic skills such as research, writing, and presenting with a focus on world affairs and current events.  Students gain skills in debate, negotiation, and conflict resolution, and they develop empathy and tolerance – all competencies that will serve them well in college, career, and for life.

The UNSIL program is presented in partnership with the Annette J. Roberts & Joan R. Robertson Fund for World Peace, World Law, and Peace Education at the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

Co-sponsored by:  Peace Action of WI & Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom

Rickey Gard Diamond, Bernadette Karanja, and Bianca Shaw will present their views on a gender-equal world.  A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.  A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive.  A world where difference is valued and celebrated.

The theme of their presentations is “We can forge women's equality.  Collectively, we can all ‘inspire inclusion,’ celebrate women's achievements, raise awareness about discrimination, and take action to drive gender parity.”

The Presenters

Now a Ms. Magazine columnist, Rickey Gard Diamond began learning about economic systems as a single mom on welfare. She edited a newspaper on poverty issues while getting an education, and in 1985, became founding editor of Vermont Woman, where she continued as a contributing editor for 34 years. She taught writing and literature at Vermont College for over 20 years, publishing fiction and non-fiction. Her novel Second Sight, and her short story collection, Whole Worlds Could Pass Away, include class, gender, and money troubles.

Accepted for a writing residency at Hedgebrook, she worked on a new story-based feminist economic primer, including cartoons illustrated by Peaco Todd. She wondered why money, race, and sex seemed intertwined, with billionaires mostly white males, and the poorest most often women of color.

The resulting book, Screwnomics: How the Economy Works Against Women and Real Ways to Make Lasting Change was published by SheWritesPress in 2018 and won the Independent Book Publishers Award Silver Medal in 2019 for Women’s Issues. Her Ms. column, Women Unscrewing Screwnomics, focuses on women making change in a field exclusively male until recently. She founded An Economy of Our Own, a network of feminist writers and change-makers dedicated to women's joined efforts to transform an economy waged as war to one that wages healthy lives.

Bianca Shaw is an innovative Director, Policy Advisor, and Senior Strategist with more than 16 years of leadership experience and progressive public service in non-profit, state, and local governance.  Bianca has designed and managed social service, economic development, and community advocacy programs. She is an Executive Consultant who has influenced both state and local policy programs.

She is adept at crafting and executing a vision to transform communities and create effective social change. Bianca's mission is to help individuals move from poverty and low - income situations to middle income and stability. She is a proud graduate of the WI Women’s Network Policy Institute 2017 cohort.

Bernadette Karanja is The Chief Equity Officer of the City of Milwaukee and was appointed by Mayor Cavalier Johnson to head the Office of Equity and Inclusion. In this role, she oversees the city’s racial equity and inclusion efforts, the Office of Workforce Development, the city’s small business development program, and serves as a liaison to the Equal Rights Commission.

Ms. Karanja is a Kenyan-American who immigrated to the United States 22 years ago. Prior to immigrating to the US, she was a business owner.  As a result of this experience she has a unique understanding of the challenges of managing a business. Ms. Karanja has over two decades of workforce development experience, 17 have been in senior management roles and seven of have been in small business inclusion work.

Ms. Karanja is a hands-on leader, adept at driving for results, motivating people, and capable of moving from higher-level planning to tactical collaboration.  Examples of her leadership efforts include integrating regional workforce development models into Fatherhood, Healthy Relationship, Re-entry, and Head Start models including Mayor Barrett’s Compete Milwaukee Program, and DirectConnectMKE, Milwaukee Common Council’s first workforce development social media platform.

The Historic Mission of the Golden Rule Ship

In 1958, a crew of Quakers sailed the Golden Rule from Hawaii towards the Marshall Islands, intending to protest and interfere with atmospheric nuclear weapons tests, although that voyage was halted and the crew arrested.

The Golden Rule action inspired many peacemakers and peace ships that followed. As a result of this highly publicized mission and public outcry about the radiation blowing around the world, President John Kennedy signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 1963.

Golden Rule was rescued from a watery grave in 2010 and restored in 2015 by Veterans For Peace and others who support her new mission: to promote a nuclear-free future, and educate about the dangers of radiation to humanity and the environment. It toured the West Coast and Hawaii extensively. In September 2022 it went overland to Minnesota to start the Great Loop.

We inform the public of the true causes of war and the enormous costs of wars, with an obligation to heal the wounds of wars. Our network is comprised of over 140 chapters worldwide whose work includes: educating the public, advocating for a dismantling of the war economy, providing services that assist veterans and victims of war, and most significantly, working to end all wars.

We work in coalition with other peace, justice, and veterans groups on improving VA health care, funding community housing and mental health programs, preventing suicides, ending veteran homelessness, showing the links between militarism and climate change, and promoting peace in our communities as well as peace abroad.

We sponsor an annual Armistice Day program at City Hall on November 11th to celebrate peace, not militarism. We meet monthly and welcome non-veterans to join us as associate members.

Pastors for Peace 2023 Friendshipment Caravan to Cuba

 Welcoming/Fundraiser Event

A Benefit to Send Medicines to the Embargoed People of Cuba

Friday - May 19th, 2023 from 6 – 8 PM

Zao MKE Church – 2319 East Kenwood Blvd. – Milwaukee, WI 53211

The program will begin with a potluck dinner and Cuban music from 6 to 7 PM, with a program from 7 to 8 PM.  This will welcome and send off this year’s Pastors For Peace Friendshipment to Cuba, continuing over 30 years of support for the people of Cuba, often as acts of civil disobedience.

During the same 30 years, the United Nations General Assembly every year has almost unanimously condemned the continued US economic blockade of Cuba, which was tightened during the pandemic and continues today.  Cuba is now experiencing severe shortages of food, medicine, and fuel, and sharply increased emigration to the U.S. as a result.

In addition to hearing from a representative of the Pastors' Friendshipment Caravan, the program will feature Dr. Alexandra Skeeter of Milwaukee, a recent graduate of Cuba’s international medical school in Havana, which offers tuition-free education to qualified students from over 60 nations in the developing world, and to US students of color especially.  Original Afro-Cuba art and other items will be available for donation.

This event is organized by the Wisconsin Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba.  It was founded in 1994, inspired by organizers’ first-hand witness of serious food and material shortages in Cuba, alongside the commitment of the Cuban people to endure.  The Coalition’s points of unity include respect for Cuba’s sovereignty and opposition to artificial obstacles between the peoples of the U.S. and Cuba and to all means of economic or other coercion.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE UNSIL WORLD FAIR

The United Nations Schools of International Learning (UNSIL) program has been implemented in grades 4 through 8 at MPS’ most diverse schools since 2016.

In the program, students learn about the United Nations and its member countries throughout the world.  They think critically about real-world problems and research solutions, and work together to develop a global perspective.

Each year culminates in a World Fair where students present their work to each other and to the community and enjoy cultural performances from fellow MPS students.

Through this experience, students master critical academic skills such as research, writing, and presenting with a focus on world affairs and current events.  Students gain skills in debate, negotiation, and conflict resolution, and they develop empathy and tolerance – all competencies that will serve them well in college and careers.
