The documentary’s presenter, Liz Oliva Fernández, is a Cuban journalist, feminist, and anti-racist activist who received the prestigious Gracie Award in 2021 alongside a host of celebrities, including Kerry Washington and Lena Waithe.

In 2021 she was also a co-winner of a One World Media Award, besting BBC and Al Jazeera, as well as a Telly Award for her groundbreaking work presenting, reporting, and producing The War on Cuba docuseries.

Liz's courageous and hard-hitting investigative journalism reveals the devastating impact of U.S. sanctions on the Cuban people, offering a rarely-seen nuanced perspective on Cuba and U.S. – Cuba relations.

Belly of the Beast is an innovative U.S.-based media outlet that tells Cuba’s untold stories through hard-hitting journalism and stunning cinematography. Since launching in early 2020, Belly of the Beast has become the go-to source for news and information about Cuba for young people in the United States.

Breaking with the practice of parachute journalism, Belly of the Beast is pioneering a new model of collaboration among Cuban and U.S.-based journalists and filmmakers, bringing greater awareness, and understanding of the complex realities of Cuba and U.S. – Cuba relations through incisive, compelling, and transformative documentary journalism and films.

Belly of the Beast’s work has been featured in numerous outlets, including The New York Review of Books, The Hill, The Nation, ESPN, Democracy Now!, and the Miami New Times, among others.

The visit is coordinated by the Wisconsin Cuba Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cubawww.wicuba.org – in cooperation with sponsors at each event.
